Small Tools

Some good friends of mine gave me these small tools the other day. They are about 150mm in length. So far I have stripped them of the paint, patinated them and burnt the handles black. Still working on what to put on them but even by themselves they are pretty cute!

For our invites for the show at Prospect Gallery we decided to make seed packets. The information we printed onto stickers and inside we have a mixture of seeds for people to plant, grow and enjoy.

Beer and pizza was involved....

Piles of invites. It was a little tedious as we had to do 700 of them but worth the effort I think.

Pitchforks

I got these pitchforks at the markets a few weekends ago. They are going in the group show 'Room for Growth' I am in which opens next month.
Hay consists of many different types of grasses. This particular grass is called Bermuda grass. I have made them out of brass and them sandblasted them. Havent glued them in yet, still relying on the masking tape....

This pitchfork I have fungi growing out of it. Made from copper and I have just kept the colour from the heat used to make them. I keep making more and adding to it. So this is where I am at now. When do I STOP!!!! will I keep adding to it forever.....

Another Gripe

So today I had a call from a certain gallery I stock with, (will not name but will delete from my stockists....) basically telling me that the reason why my work is not selling is that it is too expensive. What the......
They have had my work for a few months and have not really sold much in that time. Which is fine and I know that sometimes the work doesnt sell everywhere but giving me a reason of too expensive is outrageous. My collection of works have a range of jewellery items ranging from a retail price of $120. So that means I am selling my work for $60. How can that be too much, what IS TOO MUCH is their god damn commission.
I was told that they know my work is handmade but maybe there are different processes to making this work. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont tell me how to make my work...Puuuuulllllease! who the hell do they think they are. Now I am not going to go on about what the work is they are talking about. Lets just say that it is definitely selling in other galleries around Australia.
I did defend the whole scenario by mentioning that its not just price, but display, location, selling skills and a whole mixed bag of things, not to mention this new global slump we are heading towards... I was met with a a defensive; 'oh we pride ourselves on our display' etc etc and we have talked to other people about pricing and there was even a bit of name dropping about fellow successful jewellers. I just couldn't be bothered with the whole conversation so I cut it short but I am kinda wishing that I had gone on a bit more about stuff.
I don't mind the fact that my stuff doesn't sell in certain shops, that's reality but I think its a bit rich telling me my work is too expensive. Especially when it is selling elsewhere, its made of precious metals, where prices have skyrocketed in the last 12months, and my work is hand fabricated.
Anyway that is my rant for now. A little more disillusioned about the whole gallery shop scene than before and definitely disillusioned about the people who run them. I am not sure that they realise that the person they are talking to is a struggling artist trying to make a living out of it and working part time at shitty jobs to make ends meet.
Its not easy being an artist but this is my chosen path with which I will continue to pursue. I just think that sometimes we all need to know what is going on to be able to change things. Especially where things have been taken advantage of. Just a little food for thought......

Yes I know its true... In this up and coming ( all too soon) garden show I am in, I have made some pieces that are not about fungi. Dont worry there is still some fungi pieces too.
This particular piece has flowers which are made from copper and just heat treated. Some fallen petals lay by the wayside.

Last week I went to Melbourne to install this piece in a lovely couples home. They had been looking for a while for a piece of artwork to go in this particular space. I am very happy they chose my artwork and it goes great with their furnishings and style of house. They have large windows surrounding this room bringing the garden into the house. The green colours compliment the artwork and make it a part of this space. I think this piece has gone to a good home and I hope that they will forever enjoy it.

I am in a group show in November of this year with some friends of mine. It is about gardens, gardening, plants etc etc. It will be held at Prospect Gallery in Adelaide.
I am thinking of doing some things with these little babies. Though I would like to go out and find some more, possibly larger implements.
Thats the plan for now anyway......

Five Australian makers have come together in Object Gallery's Project Space to showcase work that is evocative, unexpected and yet familiar. Each artist embraces the opposing forces inherent in the natural world - of degradation and transformation; healing and death; sublime beauty and harsh reality. These makers inhabit a strange space...

Michelle Kelly's striking installation Basidiomycota, 2007-2011 engages us in the regularly overlooked 'Fifth Kingdom' of fungi. By magnifying these forms the artist gives us a rare and intimate experience of the organisms that contribute so significantly yet thanklessly to the working order of the earth. This photo is just a peek at the work that really does need to be seen in its entirety, occupying the gallery wall. As Kelly's practice centres around architectural works both for space and also for the body, to coincide with this exhibition Collect has brought in a range of Michelle Kelly's gloriously crafted, organic jewellery for a limited time- definately not to be missed!

Repulsed? Beguiled? Indeed What Did You Expect, 2010 from Juz Kitson will arrest you at once. A curious assemblage of viscera meets science fiction, where an alternate nature is presented. By collecting and borrowing from nature, these extraordinary and evocative pieces have been born and delicately placed out of context-the array of manipulated skulls, bones and vertebrae once decayed and lifeless are given a new chance and a new history. At first glance Still Life: The Food Bowl by Ken & Julia Yonetani appears to be no more than a pure appropriation of the still life genre. Of course upon deeper contact we discover that this traditional display has been superbly crafted entirely from Australian groundwater salt and this realisation elevates the work to a whole new level. By using the salt, a noxious agricultural by-product, along with drawing on the still life genre, the artists are commenting on the current agricultural practices developed to bring new food produce to the table of a rising European bourgeois class. In fact 550, 000 tonnes of groundwater salt are pumped out of the Murray Darling basin alone each year.... Wow! Now we see the themes of consumption, luxury, vanity and mortality emerge...tres chic!

Natalia Milosz-Piekarska's whimsical wearable pieces celebrate the 'spirit' within objects. The fantasmagorical series Immortal Morsels explores the mysterious world of food and its uses as a medium for worship, healing and protection. The artist uses a veritable apothecary of materials to create this collection of weird and wonderful charms and artefacts. Wacky and delicious all at once!

Emily Valentine-Bullock's work prompts us to consider how we classify animals - as pet or pest? In Mynah Squardron, 2011 the artist uses feathers as paint to create a colony of aeroplanes that stimulate us with the uncomfortable nature of the feather. Have we perhaps changed our contemporary view towards wearing bird parts because of fashion? Or are we more caring towards animals today? These are the questions that this body of work begs us to consider.

Another amazing talk found on Ted. This fashion designer has experimented with growing a type of material out of Kombucha, which is a tea made from microbiotic organisms such as bacteria. Its not totally resolved yet but its a great start to using a natural product that has less impact on natural resources and the environment. Click here for the link......

Bit Disheartened

Havent posted for a while. Will have some images soon of my show at Object when I get them. I am so slack at remembering to either take the photos or even the camera that I got my good friend to take some for me. Just waiting for them to get to me now....
But in the mean time I have been a bit disheartened with the whole selling stuff in a gallery thing. Its not easy to make a living out of a craft but when the gallery puts some of your work in a locked cupboard that no-one can see it makes it slightly harder.
We give the work to them for free, so their displays look all nice, dont get paid till the piece is sold (and they have decided to do their books) and they make the same amount of money as me. Whats it all about??? They decide on where the work gets put, they decide if and when your work goes on display.... Do we have a say in what we want from the gallery, as in display, marketing etc.. NO we dont!!!! So why do we give them our stuff. As a jeweller its very frustrating and if no-one gave them the work on commission their beautiful, nicely made shelves would be bloody empty.
So what is to be done....I dont know. Can anyone help, does anyone have an idea, solution, opinion. Do we need a union or something. I dont know, all I know is that we need to have more of a say about our own work.

Johannes kindly gave me a tour of workshop bilk. He has a great set up there and I also had a look at the workshop at ANU where he teaches. It has been changed a bit since I was last there a few years ago but enough benches to accomodate 30 students....

Moving Studios

On monday I moved studios....
I am still at the JamFactory, in fact my new studio is just next door. I now have a window that looks out into the building. Now people can see me too....Good and Bad.

My set up has changed a bit as I am now in a different spot to the other studio but it seems to be working out okay so far. I have gone from a black wall to a red wall. I am kinda liking the red....

Frames for some brooches. The frames were made by John Quan - great furniture designer. Then I made some hooks out of copper, painted a base coat then spray painted them white. The brooches are similar to some wall pieces that are going in the show as well.

So its been a busy year already and have been a bit slack on the posting front. Spent the new year in Perth which was nice for a couple of weeks but am now back and working day and night on my show for Craft ACT.

This is the second wall installation I am making for my show at Craft ACT in Feb next year. Still getting the logistics right for it using card cutouts of the shapes and format for the pieces that will be made in copper. I like the card but its just not practical......

This is set up in my studio but in the show it will be situated in the middle of a 6metre wall. It is hard to visualize but I hope it works.

Anti-vibration Gloves

I use my pendant drill a LOT, HEAPS, and sometimes for long periods of time. I do stop and rest my hand etc but sometimes, especially towards deadlines that doesnt happen too much. And there are times when my hand and arm are quite sore the next day.

So recently I went and purchased these new gloves to try. They come as a pair but I only use the right one. They are anti-vibration gloves. They have gel pads in the palms and you can actually get different types that have full gel pads, full fingers, different sizes etc. These particular ones have two gel pads giving a bit more flexibility.

I am not sure if they are helping as yet but I am sure they are doing no harm. Needless to say I still take breaks from using the drill and do other things.

I dont have a methodical way of working I realized today. I work on something for a while then I work on something else, then something else, then I look at the list I wrote and work on something else. I am not sure if this is productive or not....
I feel like I worked all day but with little outcome. I guess if I meet the deadlines its not all bad....

Wall Installation

This is how I am trying to figure out one of the wall installations going in the show 'Hidden Treasures' at Craft ACT in Feb 2011. I needed a 6m wall and went to a friends studio who had a wall that i could borrow that was just over 5m. I have made the pieces roughly in cardboard.

Then stuck them onto the wall with masking tape and pins. (handy pin up board there)

Went out and bought some spray paint and painted them black. As I am going to make the pieces in copper and oxidise them. There are four different shapes. I am still playing around with them and refining them but I think that its a good start.....

1. Because I havent been doing anything much exciting, since the teawares exhibition and since I went to Bali on holiday.

I recently bought this book online which arrived the other day. It has great images in it and i particularly like the inside covers with the little hand drawn images of certain biological aspects of the fungi.

Anyway so thats where I am at and hopefully to be making some interesting stuff soon.......

At the end of June I am in a group show at JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design called Teawares. I decided to make some tea cannisters, which are proving to be quite a challenge to make. I have made them from 65mm copper pipe. Last week i had them food grade tin plated. They plated the whole thing as it was easier for them even though i only wanted the inside done, as i am going to patinate the outside. Unfortunately the plating was unsuccessful so i am trying out some other ideas. Hopefully these will work.

These are my new works that I have developed for the show in Perth. I am now using spray paint for these pieces and I like the effect much better. Instead of using a board as the main frame I have mounted these onto a shelf which hangs on the wall. I am also making some jewellery pieces to accompany these wall pieces.

These are the results of experimenting with some different shapes of fungi for the Return show in Perth. I made them into wall pieces with patinated, oxidised and heat coloured copper. But I am not very happy with how they turned out. It could be the thickness of the stalks or the actual way I have placed the pieces. Not sure, but I am going to now make something else and these can stay on my studio wall until I can think of something else to do with them. Pull them apart most likely and start again.....

Theres that large black wall installation again. I think i have put this piece up about 5 times now. It changes every single time. In this instance i had to change it to hide a power point. I wonder how many more times i will put this up. A few more hopefully, i think i have it down pat now, though its always the last few pieces that take the time in placement....

It consists of installations, wall pieces, floor sculpture and jewellery.

This is a piece that I recently installed in a clients house. It is situated in the entrance of the house. This image is the start of installation.

The first pieces are up. The work is made of 0.6mm copper that is oxidised a black colour and are screwed straight into the walls.

Since first becoming interested in the structures, forms and colours of fungi I have done quite a bit of research on the 'Fifth Kingdom'. I am always finding out new facts, new websites to look at and new and exciting information about fungi, not to mention some fantastic images. I think the most amazing information I have come across is a talk by Paul Stamets on 6 ways mushrooms can save the world.
Paul Stamets is a Mycologist who is inspirational on the functions and uses of fungi. He has also written a book 'Mycellium Running' which I have but have not yet read. I pick it up and read bits every now and then. Some of it is quiet technical, but very informative. If you never knew much about mushrooms and fungi this talk will blow your mind about what they can do.

Experimenting

I have started working with cement as a base for fungi to grow. I want to bring in the urban aspect as the base for the fungi element which are also made of metal. urban on urban. lets see how it works. here i have just made blocks of cement with a rough feature. Tried to drill holes in the concrete. did work but you cant get a masonary drill bit less that 3mm and i want it to be 1mm or less. so i did go through quite a few drill bits.

Managed to drill some holes in this one. Different cement. This is a more sand mix.

This piece i made more free form and made the cracks happen. Wasnt sure if it would still hold together but it does after it dries. Fasinating stuff. This is thin too so not as heavy as the other pieces.

A new pile of cement. These bags are quite heavy too. They were given to me as a birthday present by my good friend Deb Jones. I think she may have her eye on them too so i better get making some stuff...

I soldered a leaf shape in 1mm silver to the back where the sprues were.
